Das Improvisationstrio „The Contest of Pleasures“ konzipiert gemeinsam mit den beiden Elektroakustikern Jean Pallandre und Laurent Sassi ein Konzert.

Ausgangsmaterial sind verschiedene Arten von Audioaufnahmen die in den Tagen vor dem Konzert in Ulrichsberg angefertigt werden. Die Aufführung besteht letztlich aus einem Mix dieser per Zuspielung hörbar gemachten Aufnahmen und der Live-Improvisation des Trios.

„In the days before the concert we will explore the local area and make some field recordings of natural and mechanical ambient sounds - hopefully interesting and evocative of the location. We may include some input from the musicians‘ instruments, but additionally we will capture the trio playing in a few distinctive acoustics.

After listening to the gold we have gathered, we will make a selection to be used in the performance, and, if it feels appropriate, organise a structure. Within this, all 5 of us will improvise - Sassi and Pallandre with the location recordings and the 6 speaker system, The Contest of Pleasures with saxophone, trumpet and clarinet. The speaker system will also be used for live mixing of signals from the wind trio‘s multiple microphone set up.“ (John Butcher)

Xavier Charles initiierte „The Contest of Pleasures“ im Jahr 1999. Neben Konzerttourneen durch Frankreich und die Schweiz absolvierte das Trio Auftritte bei renommierten Festivals wie „Musique Action“ in Vandoeuvrve, „Huddersfield Contemporary“ in England und „Victoriaville“ in Kanada.

Im Mai 2005 gab es ein erstes Kooperationsprojekt mit dem Elektroniker und Tontechniker Laurent Sassi in Albi/Frankreich (CD: „Albi Days“, Potlatch, 2005). Für das Projekt in Ulrichsberg wird mit Jean Pallandre ein weiterer Elektroniker/Klangregisseur beigezogen. In der Woche vor dem Konzert werden zunächst vorbereitende Aufnahmen in Ulrichsberg gemacht, die als Spielmaterial dienen, und weiters Versuche mit multiplen Mikrofonierungen und Klangverteilung im Raum unternommen. Die Ergebnisse werden im Konzert am 12.6. präsentiert.

Laurent Sassi und Jean Pallandre, beide aus Frankreich, beide Spezialisten auf dem Gebiet elektronischer Klangmanipulation und Klangdistribution.
