It’s already the 17th anniversary of our tradition to end the year silently – and each year more people are enjoying a contemplative beginning of the New Year. The Viennese Ensemble Plenum is taking us with Early Music and such from the 20th century to paradisiacal gardens, heavenly hideaways and paradises on Earth. Seven bass recorders (from bassett to sub-great bass recorder) and a vocalist are uniting English Renaissance music from the 16th century with contemporary compositions by Pauline Oliveros, Burkhard Stangl and Gunter Schneider, specifically composed for the ensemble.

The desire for paradise is not a platonic solution, doubling the world and its‘ way of acquirement – mundane and heavenly – so it is not a typically religious ideology, but a poetic attempt to connect illusion, surreal visionary possibilities and humanity’s creative power, and to overcome the world not only with science but also with a sensual view, with art.
